Yesterday we took advantage of the fantastic weather and walked up from the lodge to the front of Wansfell Pike. from there we sauntered through Skelghyll Wood marvelling at the swathes of bluebells as we went.

There were also carpets of wild garlic that filled the air with their heady scent and delighted the eye with their delicate white flowers.

We stopped off for a moment at Jenkin Crag, which was named Britain’s most romantic spot for a picnic by Country Life magazine. It’s a lovely spot with a great view.

We returned along the lake and then up Holbeck Lane to Troutbeck.

Calico Trikes – a new way to see the Lakes?

We had a visit from David Lister of Calico Trikes on Friday.

Here he is driving past Kingfisher Lodge.

He’s offering a discount to our guests – it looks like a fun way to do the sights and you’d certainly get a bit of attention as you cruise through Ambleside on that.

I may have to try it and report back on what it’s like

Careful with that Sat Nav!

We do warn people to be careful with following sat-nav directions from Ings to our lodge, as you tend to get directed over a narrow but busy lane which exits onto the blind brow of a hill that boy racers on motorbikes and in cars like to drive over at 60 MPH or more

It was interesting to read in the Westmorland Gazette that this is a more general problem, especially at this time of year.

MOTORISTS are finding themselves stranded on the Lake District’s high mountain passes in treacherous conditions because of ‘sat-navs’, police have warned.

Officers from Cumbria Constabulary have had to rescue an increasing number of drivers from high mountain roads, such as the Kirkstone Pass, and ‘The Struggle’, after they followed instructions by electronic satellite navigation systems.

The sat-nav systems do not take into account bad weather conditions, and so motorists should use their common sense when planning routes, say police.

PC Christine Nelson, of Cumbria Police, said: “I would urge people not to rely too heavily on their sat nav systems when travelling through Cumbria. Most systems calculate the shortest route with the least traffic, and nine times out of ten this will take you over the A592 Kirkstone Pass and The Struggle when planning routes through the Lake District.

“These are high mountain passes which invariably experience adverse weather conditions at the summit, even when the weather may seem OK at shore level.”

In Rainbows

It seems to have rained all year so far! One thing I do notice though is that you get a lot of beautiful views as a result up here. The rain actually suits the landscape if that makes any sense. This misty view is taken from the dog field at the bottom end of the park.

Later the same day we went to Ambleside and the sun came out briefly giving us yet another stunning rainbow. They never seem quite so vivid on the photos I take of them as they are in real life!

Anyway – don’t let anyone tell you that there is going to be a drought this year!
